fermentation: the process in which foods are broken down into simpler compounds

This shows beer which is an example of fermentation. When beer is being brewed, the carbohydrates are being converted into alcohol which is the process of fermentation. Although fermentation is a naturally occurring process, humans have perfected their own process to make products such as beer.

ethylene: a growth substance that acts as a plant hormone to help ripen fruit.

This shows a banana that is beginning to ripen because of ethylene.

altruistic behavior: when individuals of the same species jeopardise their own well-being to help increase the reproduction of their entire species.

This shows an empty bee hive that at one point was the home to bees that had altruistic behavior. Bees are a great example of this because they do all that they can to insure that the queen bee has everything she needs to reproduce.

frond: a long stem that has leaves growing out from the middle.

This shows a fern which has leaves called fronds.

mycelium: mass of hyphae (small, fine tubes that make up mycelium) that makes up the vegetative part of a fungus.

This shows mycelium, which is actually the fruit of the mushroom.

parenchyma cells: most common type of cell in plants. These cells store the water, oil, and starch that the plant needs to survive.

This shows a shrub that is full of parenchyma cells.

genetically modified organism: an organism in which the genetic material has been modified by gene engineering.

This shows corn that I found in my garden and is often genetically modified to be resistant to pesticides.
